Ideation Sketches

These Ideation Sketches explore different ergonomic chairs through cushions, form, armrests, and legs.

During the ideation sketch phase, I kept in mind rough ergonomic measurements such as the angle of the back seat for the most comfortable lounge chair, the length and width of the seat as well as the favorable height.

I explored sketches 4, 13, and 23 further below but the final design I went forward with, after a few changes, is on page 2, sketch 23

I chose three ideation sketches to move forward with and experimented with the side profile. In terms of ergonomic design, I researched the perfect angle of lounge chairs; beyond that, the experimentation of the legs was solely for aesthetics. The final design is page 3, design 23.2; top right.

Lounge Chair Design Analysis

As I wanted to design a Neutral, ergonomic, luxury lounge chair, I analyzed two currently on the market that checks all three of those boxes.

Key takeaways are Luxury lounge chairs usually come in several colors, fabrics, and material finishes.

Materials and craftsmanship are high quality to justify the price.

Mixing and matching materials are aesthetically pleasing.

Market Analysis
Lounge Chair- Market Analysis 1.png
Key Takeaways

I analyzed popular lounge chairs that were currently on the market ranging from $500 to $1500.

I learned that foam is a great material for seat cushions and thin wooden armrests are extremely uncomfortable.

This market analysis made me realize for my design, I wanted:

  • Comfortable armrests (preferably with cushions)

  • Removable and washable cushions

  • Headrest with adjustable straps

  • A mix of luxury materials and fabrics

  • Unique design with curvatures
